Olen vuosien mittaan käsitellyt teoksissani ravintoon ja sen tuottamiseen liittyviä seikkoja. Installaatioitteni materiaalit kuten lihan ja maidon tuottamisen sivutuotteet eli sarvet, luut ja nahka – antavat vihjeen siitä, miten ihminen on valjastanut luonnon käyttöönsä, ravinnokseen. Materian konkreettisuus toteutuu ruoka-aineissa: vain syötynä ruoka ravitsee. Virtuaaliruoka on oma lajinsa.

Teoksieni materiaalit eivät ole teosteni aiheita. Teokseni eivät käsittele esimerkiksi hilloa tai lehmän sarvia. Materiaali on ilmaisun ja kommunikaation väline. Materiaali on metafora, joka ohjaa kohti teoksen sisältöjä ja tulkintaa. Metafora luo uusia rinnastuksia.

Mansikkapaikka-installaatiossa makeanpunainen hillo on kuin yltäkylläisesti hehkuva tulva, jonne pienet pronssi- ja terästalot uppoavat. Hetkellisyyttä, hetken nautintoa alleviivaava hillo on samanaikaisesti houkutteleva ja kielletty, epäterveellinen nautintoaine. Toisaalta, metallilla, varsinkin pronssilla on ”ikuisen materiaalin” leima taiteessa.

Työskentelyssäni on kaksi juonnetta: materiaalien ja esineiden korostunut fyysisyys ja toisaalta piirustuksen, valokuvan ja videon etäännyttävä ominaisuus. Näiden piirteiden vuorottelu kiehtoo minua. Työstämiini materiaaleihin liittyy ambivalentti kauneus ja kauheus. Esimerkiksi tuoksuva mansikkahillo näyttää kiiltävän houkuttelevalta, mutta toisaalta se voi tuoda mieleen myös veren ja sisälmykset.

Strawberry patch

Food and diverse aspects pertaining to its production have been a reoccurring subject in my work. The materials of my installations, for instance horns, leather and bone – the by-products of the production of milk and meat – refer to the way in which people have attempted to harness nature for their consumption. The practical aspect of food is evident: it is nourishing only when eaten. Virtual food is another thing.

The materials I employ in my work are not the topic of my work. The subject matter of my work is not, for example, jam or cow horns. Materials are a means of communication. Material is a metaphor, which is a factor in the interpretation of a work. Metaphors bring forth new juxtapositions.

The installation Strawberry Patch is a luminously flooded landscape made of red jam which engulfs small house-like structures made of bronze and steel. Jam, emphasizing the sweet pleasure of instant gratification, is simultaniously an attractive nutrient and a saccharine, unhealthy comfort food. Then again, metals, specifically bronze, have the aura of an eternal material in art.

My artistic practice intertwines the corporeal aspect of materials and objects with the characteristics of drawings, photographs and videos. The interplay between these features fascinates me. The materials I utilize in my work are charged with an ambiguous beauty. Thus, strawberry jam looks alluring although from another viewpoint it may bring into mind blood and intestines.
